Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)
What is Interpersonal Therapy and how can it help me?
Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) is a short-term, structured form of therapy that focuses on improving your relationships and how you relate to others. It’s based on the idea that our emotional well-being is closely tied to our social connections. When relationships are strained, life transitions are overwhelming, or grief is unresolved, depression and other emotional struggles often follow. IPT helps you explore and strengthen the way you communicate, resolve conflict, and navigate changes in your relationships.
What does a session look like?
In an IPT session, you and your therapist focus on specific areas of your life where relationships may be contributing to emotional distress. This might include:
Exploring a recent loss (like the death of a loved one or the end of a relationship)
Navigating role changes (like becoming a parent, retiring, or moving)
Working through conflicts with a partner, friend, or family member
Addressing feelings of isolation or difficulty connecting with others
You’ll talk through patterns, practice communication strategies, and set goals for change—all with a focus on improving your relational health.
How does it help?
It helps you understand the connection between your mood and your relationships.
You’ll gain tools to communicate more clearly, resolve conflict, and express your needs.
It supports you in processing grief, adjusting to life changes, and reducing isolation.
By improving the quality of your relationships, your overall emotional health improves too.
Interpersonal Therapy helps you feel better by improving the way you connect with others. Whether you’re dealing with loss, change, or conflict, IPT offers practical support for healing relationships and strengthening emotional well-being.
