Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
What is EMDR and how can it help me?
EMDR is a therapy designed to help people heal from trauma and distressing life experiences. Instead of just talking about the trauma, EMDR helps your brain reprocess painful memories so they no longer feel as overwhelming or triggering. It’s especially helpful for people dealing with trauma, PTSD, anxiety, or negative self-beliefs tied to past experiences.
What does a session look like?
In EMDR, you’ll work with your therapist to choose a memory or issue to target. While focusing briefly on that memory, the therapist will guide you through sets of bilateral stimulation—usually eye movements, tapping, or sounds that go back and forth from left to right. You don’t have to describe the memory in detail. Your brain does the work of reprocessing, like helping a stuck file finally download.
How does it help?
EMDR helps your brain reprocess memories that are “stuck,” reducing the emotional charge they carry.
It can shift negative beliefs like “I’m not safe” or “It was my fault” into more balanced, empowering beliefs.
You don’t have to relive all the details of the trauma—your brain heals while you stay grounded in the present.
EMDR often brings relief more quickly than traditional talk therapy for trauma.
EMDR helps you heal from trauma by changing how your brain stores distressing memories. You’ll still remember what happened, but it won’t feel as painful or triggering—and you can move forward with more freedom and peace.
