The Flash Technique

What is the Flash Technique and how can it help me?
The Flash Technique is a gentle therapy approach that helps reduce the emotional pain connected to upsetting or traumatic memories—without having to talk about the details of the memory. It’s especially helpful if you feel overwhelmed or shut down when thinking about past experiences. Instead of diving into the memory, you focus on something positive while your brain briefly and subtly processes the hard stuff in the background.

What does a session look like?
In a session, your therapist helps you choose a mildly distressing memory to work on and then supports you in picking a positive, emotionally uplifting focus—like a favorite place, a funny video, or a happy memory. While you stay focused on this positive image, the therapist guides you through a series of very brief mental “flashes” of the target memory, often using gentle eye movements or tapping. You’ll check in now and then to see if the distress level is going down.

  • You stay grounded and emotionally safe by focusing on something positive.

  • You don’t need to relive or talk through painful details.

  • Most people notice that the memory becomes less upsetting, often fairly quickly.
